Recovery

Recovery wards

Music Intervention for recovery wards focuses on patients where the majority have been sedated for surgery. These patients will need a short or long stay in the recovery area, where they will be observed and treated for pain and nausea.

Duration of stay in the recovery area depends on the type of sedation received, type of operation as well as the patient’s condition.

Effect

In recovery wards music intervention is used to make the patient’s recovery from surgery as comfortable as possible. It’s been demonstrated through several clinical studies that recovering patients, who receive music intervention, experience reduced anxiety, stress and pain and thus are better able to handle their situation. Moreover, in several cases, less nausea and analgesic medication is being used which in turn reduces the patient’s side effects.

Application

In recovery wards it’s recommended that music intervention, as a starting point, is given to all patients. After 15-30 minutes of intervention a short break is typically provided and the patient may be asked about wanting to continue the music intervention.
Depending upon the recovery wards structure and function both permanently installed and / or mobile music intervention can be used. In wards where patients are only staying for short periods (high turnover) fixed installations are typically installed while mobile equipment is used for longer stays or where the equipment follows the patient around the ward.
